Before you decide

If your rabbit or guinea pig pulls up and swallows fibre, remove the grass from its area and consult a vet: in these animals, an intestinal blockage is an emergency.

How many metres do you need?

Measure each area, add them up and include the recommended 10% allowance for cuts and joins. The calculator does this for you and tells you which models suit your case.

Calculate my square metres

Is it a good idea to put artificial grass down for a rabbit?

For a supervised play or exercise area, yes: it's dry, there's no mud or potentially toxic plants, and the rabbit can't dig a way out under the fence. As the flooring of an enclosure where it spends hours alone, no: rabbits and guinea pigs gnaw, and swallowing synthetic fibre can cause an intestinal blockage. If you see it pulling at the fibre, remove it from that area.

Can it be used indoors?

Yes, in covered terraces, porches, play areas or shop windows. Indoors it gets no sun, so UV degradation stops being an issue and it lasts much longer. It's worth choosing a low pile height, 20 to 25 mm, which is easier to vacuum and maintain.

Does it get very hot in the sun?

Yes, more than natural grass: in high summer and in direct sun, a dark-coloured grass can go above 55°C in surface temperature. Olive-toned shades and cooling-fibre technology narrow the gap. A quick hose-down brings the temperature straight down, and a shade sail solves the problem on very exposed terraces.

Are there fewer fleas and ticks?

Yes. These parasites need damp and organic matter to complete their life cycle, and artificial grass doesn't provide that. It's not an absolute barrier — your pet can still bring them in from elsewhere — but it removes the breeding ground in your own garden.

Artificial grass for rabbits

With rabbits and guinea pigs, artificial grass has a clear place and a clear limit. It works well as a play or exercise area: it's dry, there's no mud or potentially toxic plants, and the animal can't dig its way out under the fencing. What it shouldn't be used for is flooring in the enclosure where it spends hours alone, because these are animals that chew, and synthetic fibre must not be swallowed.

Play area, not enclosure flooring

Use it where the animal is supervised. The first few times, watch whether it chews the fibre: if it loses interest, it can stay; if it keeps at it, remove it from that area.

Short fibre

Between 20 and 30 mm, claws catch less, and droppings and hay scraps are visible and easy to pick up.

Urine with residue

Rabbit urine carries calcium and leaves a whitish residue. Frequent rinsing with water stops it building up in the backing.

Shade and somewhere to dig

They cope poorly with heat, so the area needs shade in summer. And digging is a natural need: a box of soil or sand stops them trying it on the grass.

Tick several and we'll find a grass that works for all of them.

Short holds up better to daily footfall; tall gives volume and a grassy look.
